Is grain-free dog food worth the hype?

You’ve probably noticed that more and more pet food brands are shifting towards the ‘grain-free’ varieties. As a responsible pet owner, it can sometimes be difficult to discern the difference between a diet fad and a movement that can actually benefit your dog’s health. Here at Meatiful, we’re proud to produce healthy and delicious dog food.

What is grain-free dog food?

Grain-free dog food means what it says on the tin (or sausage in our case). It is food that contains no wheat, rye, barley, oats, maize, millet or rice. While most dogs tolerate many of these ingredients, what works for one might not work for another. Like most health food, there is always going to be debate on whether grain-free is best for your dog or not. The choice is ultimately down to you and what agrees with your pooch! Generally, grain-free dog can have the following benefits:

Helps to eliminate allergens

Many dogs are allergic to a range of cereals, so offering grain-free dog food is a great way to eliminate them. If you see an improvement in your pooch’s general health, it is likely that grains don’t agree with them. If you see no improvement, it at least rules out grains and means a bit of further investigation is needed. Remember, if your pet is unwell at any point it is always worth contacting your vet in the first instance to rule out anything more sinister.

Is great for replenishing energy stores

Many lower quality dog food brands bulk up their product with grains, which means that your pooch may not be getting everything they need to replenish their energy levels. At Meatiful, we only use the highest quality ingredients in our recipes to ensure optimum health for the nation’s dogs. Our new Turkey flavour includes mighty chickpeas, which are a fantastic source of carbohydrates as well protein.

Contributes towards maintaining a healthy weight

Grains are really high in carbohydrates and if your dog is regularly consuming a pet food with a lot of grains, they may gain weight. Just like humans, dogs need to maintain a healthy weight if they are to stay fit and well. Grain-free dog food often places more of a focus on protein and quality of the ingredients and can contribute towards maintaining a healthy weight. However, it is worth noting that not all grain-free dog food is necessarily lower in carbohydrates. That’s why it’s so important for pet owners to read the packaging before they decide what is best for their pet.

Has been known to improve your dog’s general nutrition!

Many grain-free dog food brands place more emphasis on health, tailoring and balancing ingredients with a lot more care and attention. Ultimately, this can have a massive impact on the general health and well-being of your pet. At Meatiful, both our grain-free and brown rice containing varieties are expertly crafted to deliver every ounce of goodness a dog needs to keep a spring in their step.
